This Shedding Light section, in my opinion is a diamond in the rough. It’s one of the big differentiators of the site from other “enter your data, we’ll show you the results” sites.
What’s the purpose of the Shedding Light Section?
- We’re hoping that this is the nucleus of a ground-swell. Where more and more buildings get modeled and we begin to see, in real detail, the potential solar can have.
- It’s where you can see what others have done. Specifically if you’re doing a complex array of an office building roof, you can view other commercial models and see how they were drawn.
What is the Shedding Light Section?
- It’s where all the saved solar array models (RoofRays) are made available.
- Did you know you could save any previously created RoofRay as a “Favorite” for your own account.
- Did you notice on some RoofRays, something like “2 Additional Roofrays” right under the specs for this model. That means there’s additional models for that same property. It’s possible that you might model a home or building, and someone else might do a slightly different set of arrays. In this case, the system will tell you there’s more than one model at the same location.
- Have you noticed the “by user” with a clickable screen-name after it underneath the name of each RoofRay. We believe there will be some advocates that desire to map full neighborhoods, or every Wal Mart in some city. They not only should be recognized, by you may wish to follow them along and see what they’ve done. By clicking the screen-name, the list will be filtered to just show RoofRays done by that user.
- How about the – “Still Dream’n”. Click this if an actual solar array has been installed at this location – and you can even enter the Installer – to give them recognition.
So check out the Shedding Light section and start shedding some of your own.

How do I remove a saved record? Made some mistakes and misidentified the site.

If the location is close, you can open that Solar array from the “My Calculations”, click the row of the Segment you want to tweak, then drag the verticies to their correct locations.
If it’s not even close, best way is to click “Create New Array” and start fresh.

When I went to the shedding light section it was empty. Nothing there but a map showing the general area where my house is. Nothing even to id my house.

Try zooming out. It could be that there were no RoofRay models created in that geography. Or are you saying you modeled your house, saved it, but it still didn’t show in the Shedding Light section?

“How about the – “Still Dream’n”. Click this if an actual solar array has been installed at this location – and you can even enter the Installer – to give them recognition” Does not work, I get “could not find installer. Please use the auto complete.”

Google does not have an accurate enough picture of my home location. Do you have an alternative way to calculate?

Hi
Sorry for the late response. It’s a hack but here’s the way to do it. Zoom in enough to center your home. Draw an array where you believe it should go. (Don’t worry if it’s huge at this zoom level). Then zoom all the way in, ignoring the fact that you can’t see your home, and size the array appropriately. You probably have an idea of your roof size, orientation, and angle. You can adjust all those variables without seeing the roof. The system will still calculate accurate performance data. It doesn’t need a visual picture to do that. Hopefully Google will update those sat photos soon.
